Locks and Keys

Quite by chance, today I came across a band called ‘Locks’ and their just released latest single, which is called Skin. Locks consist of L.Geary-Griffin (lead vocal / guitar), Mike Byrne (double bass), Marian McClenagan (fiddle) and Andy Marvell on drums…

Locks put themselves in the genre of “Skeletal blues” and they say their influences are Tom Waits, Nick Cave, gin and life. Locks are an unsigned band, although they might not remain unsigned for much longer because Skin has recently been heavily featured on Steve Lamacq’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music. This next track is called The Gin Song and it’s from an EP called ‘Rattle Them Bones’ which they released a few years ago…

Locks are based in north London and as far as I can tell they’ve been together for about six years. What I find unusual about them is that during this time they’ve released not much more than a handful of songs, which means that what I’m featuring here is a large part of their work. This next track is called Wishbone, which is also from the ‘Rattle Them Bones’ EP…

Next up is one of the Locks very early tracks. Released in 2013, it’s called Four and is taken from ‘A Collection of Songs about Loss & Leaving’…

Locks describe their coming together as thus: After playing with a variety of different bands with genres spanning blues, rockabilly, trad Irish, celtic punk, indie and nu-folk they found themselves in a rehearsal room together writing parts of murder ballads involving burying bodies, strange creatures and dark family secrets. This final track is called Skeletons and was released in 2015…
